The ductility of reinforcing steel has a huge impact on the safety of the structure in an emergency condition, i.e. after exceeding the permissible load values. When designing reinforced concrete structures, the maximum permissible load values are assumed with a certain safety margin. It happens that this reserve does not sufficiently protect the structure against the effects of unforeseen exceptional events, such as impacts, explosions, improper use of buildings, design or execution errors, etc. Structures particularly exposed to overloading are structures erected in mining or seismic areas and bridge structures, which are constantly subjected to dynamic and repeatedly variable loads. When designing these structures, their behavior at the emergency stage should be considered in a special way.
